STATION IMPROVEMENTS

HERNE HILL STATION GOES ACCESSIBLE

Under Network Rail's    £350million  programme    to make  strategic stations  accessible, work has begun  and this week saw  the installation of a special ticket window to make it easy for someone in a wheelchair to purchase a ticket. Work has already started on the installation  of two lifts., which will make a world of difference
for  everyone.
We are fortunate to be in the programme and also in the early phase.
10 London  suburban stations are being improved  of which three are in Lambeth.
This follows   investment  from the GLA upgrading the  security cameras at Herne Hill and  some other stations.
The old system of video film  has been replaced with live transmission
to a  staffed monitoring unit. allowing police to be summoned at the time of an incident.

LIDO  REBUILDING  LATEST NEWS ON OPENING

OUR LIDO IS RAPIDLY RISING ANEW
from its muddy building site. (See our website for pictures of this Venus-like transformation.) It is plumbed. The wet changing room, though modest in size, will preserve modesty and is already plastered. Thames Water's leisurely approach to liquid assets, means, as feared, a midsummer day's swim is off. Early July re-opening is on. Building priorities are completing: reception area; wet changing rooms; poolside surface repairs and one yoga studio for use over the summer. Whippersnappers will continue to use the cafe for classes. A temporary arrangement will be made for refreshments. The other studios, spa and fitness centre, indeed all the indoor facilities except the cafe should open in September. BLU website has architectural mock-ups showing details of inside spaces. tour de france warm up

TOUR de FRANCE WARM UP @ BROCKWELL PARK 18 APRIL
- NEXT WEDNESDAY

Lambeth Council is organising a jam packed afternoon of cycling fun in Brockwell Park on April 18 as the borough prepares for the arrival of the Tour de France in July.
Everyone is invited to the Tour de France interactive road-show where there will be a chance to learn about the world's most famous cycling race and why it is coming to Lambeth, as well as take part in competitions, quizzes and games.
There will also be a stunt bike show by 'extreme stunt rider' Rich Johnson, a penny farthing rider and more.
Earlier in the day a "Cyclist's Breakfast" will catch cyclists on their way to work from 7.30am to 10.30am, and "Dr Bike" will be on hand to fix bikes for free.
Cllr Nigel Haselden, Lambeth Council's deputy cabinet member for transport, said of the Tour coming to Lambeth:
"I'm really excited about having a truly world class sporting event taking place on Lambeth's streets. It promises to be a fantastic day and I hope as many people as possible are able to get out and cheer on the competitors. Lambeth Council has a great range of initiatives to encourage people to switch from four wheels to two, and to help to make London a world class cycling city, so it's fitting the world's premier cycle race should be staged here."
The Tour de France is an epic long distance road bicycle racing competition for professionals held over three weeks in July in and around France. However, traditionally the first stage of the race usually starts in a different country. In 2007, London has been chosen to host the beginning of this major sporting event.

brixton recreation centre

Open day at the Brixton Recreation Centre - 21 April, 9am-4pm

Lambeth Council and Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) would like to invite residents to an open day of fun, activities and information at the Brixton Recreation Centre.
See the open day news story.

Brixton Recreation Centre - £2.85 million refurbishment

On 1 April 2007, Brixton Recreation Centre closed for three months to allow for the much needed investment of £2.85 million in improved facilities and services for the community.
For more information see the Refurbishment of Brixton Recreation Centre Q&A page.
We are very sorry that we can only give such short notice of the closure. This is because commercially sensitive contract negotiations have been taking place and have only recently concluded. We made the announcement at the earliest possible opportunity. During this time only school groups will be able to use the pool - subject to thorough risk assessment and health and safety checks.

We realise this will cause inconvenience to regular users for which we apologise in advance. During the closure, Lambeth's other leisure centres will remain open and continue to operate as normal.

SHAKESPEARE ROAD SCHOOL

NEW SCHOOL MOVES A FURTHER STAGE FORWARD-  ONE MORE HURDLE.
From Cllr Rachel Heywood

Planning Committee Tuesday 10th April 7pm Lambeth Town Hall
Support needed for our new school – please come along if you can!

I think you will all agree with me in saying that we need more and better schools for our secondary school age children. The new Academy on Shakespeare Road will provide places for 1200 children, offering them improved opportunities to succeed. Whilst most people support a new school, some are unhappy that the dustcarts and other vehicles will have to be relocated from the current site. Planning permission for this move is also being discussed at Tuesday's meeting and there will be protestors against this.

It is therefore really important that people attend to show their support for the Academy on Tuesday evening. If you are able to come please do, or pass this on to others who you think may wish to come along. The Academy is the first item on the agenda so should not go on too late.

I very much hope to see you there. If you have any questions please contact me before Tuesday (email or mobile please) and I will do what I can to answer them.

With best wishes,

FRESHVIEW

FRESHVIEW COMES TO HERNE HILL   13TH APRIL
THE FRESHVIEW TEAM  HAVE WRITTEN TO INVITE PARTICIPATION.

Dear Resident of Herne Hill

Operation Freshview last came to Herne Hill ward in November last year where the Lambeth council and its partner organisations worked on cleaning up the area. In the course of the day, the following actions were taken:

There were also many specific issues raised by residents that were addressed by Operation Freshview, for example the pedestrian tunnel under Herne Hill Station was cleansed by Network Rail in December and vegetation on Network Rail land trimmed. Rubbish was also cleared by Lambeth's Streetcare department and issues of rubbish dumping raised with residents and businesses in specific areas.

We would really like your feedback on where to focus our efforts this time round.

If you have time to return the email to freshview@lambeth.gov.uk and answer the following questions, we would be very grateful. Please also come and see us on Friday 13 April on Railton Road (near Herne Hill Station) and in Brockwell Park (near the entrance), between 8am and 4pm. We will be giving out 'stubbie' pouches for collecting cigarette butts as well as information about our different services. We will also be collecting any bulky items of rubbish left out for collection in front of dwellings as well as carrying out several other cleaning, tidying and improvement activities.

Are there any particular areas where rubbish or abandoned cars have built up that you think need removing? (Please state whether this is on an estate or a public area)

Are there any premises where you think that Trading Standards or Environmental Health Officers should investigate (Trading Standards enforce a wide range of laws, including product safety, weights and measures, food labelling, credit, product counterfeiting and fair trading.) Trading Standards and the Police regularly conduct joint operations to identify licensed premises selling alcohol to people aged under 18, as well as other shops for sale of age related goods; if anybody has information about under sales whether they be of alcohol, cigarettes, or knives, please let us know. If possible, please supply specific addresses.

Are there any areas of parking related problems that Parking Attendants should look into?

Are there any areas where there is graffiti or fly posting that needs removing?

Are there any areas where you have noticed anti-social behaviour which needs tackling?

Finally, do you or anyone you know want a free home fire safety visit from the London Fire Brigade? This could involve them fitting a free smoke alarm if needed. Please call the Fire Service on 08000 28 24 28 to arrange a visit or respond to this email

PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL ON TO ANYBODY ELSE YOU KNOW IN THE AREA

We may not be able to action all your ideas on 13th  but we will make a note of your issues and include them in the Capital Cleanup campaign which has been instigated by the Mayor for London  See http://www.capitalcleanup.co.uk/ for further details.

All your personal details will be kept private and confidential and will not be used for any other purpose than identifying issues in your local area.

Many thanks

SHOPS UNDER THREAT

CROSSTHWAITE AVENUE SHOP RENT INCREASES
LOCAL POSST OFFICE CHEMIST ETC UNDER THREAT.

Dear Paul

I know this is on the edge of your area but may affect some of your readers and an issue for your blog---the above shops, which include a post office and a chemist are under threat of closure as the Council have applied huge rent increases at a time when Sainsburys is building a pharmacy into its extension at Dog Kennel Hill. The Three Hills Community forum together with the  Estate TR&A have presented to Southwark Council, a petition of nearly a thousand signatures and the matter is on the agenda of the Executive meeting on 24 april.
There is real concern as to the impact on the ageing, frail and immobile  population on this estate should these services be lost. I would urge anyone affected by this threat to give their views to their ward Members

PUNCTILLIOUS PARKING WADEN

PUNCTILLIOUS PARKING WARDEN

In Fawnbrake Avenue we are being targeted by a Lambeth parking warden who goes up and down the road on his scooter several times a day giving tickets to cars with a tyre touching a kerb. We've also had one case of a ticket issued for being parked too far from the kerb whilst a child was picking up uniform. The warden appears almost every morning around 0900 as I walk my daughter to school. What a waste of Lambeth Council resources and what a blatant revenue generation scheme. Is anyone else getting this? I plan to write to local councilors but would like to share my frustrations- and I haven't even had a ticket!!!

YOUTH MAYOR

Youth Mayor  for Lambeth

Should Lambeth have a young Mayor?

What would be the benefits of having a young Mayor?

Youth Mayor logoWell, for starters, you would get to choose who it would be.
  • A youth Mayor would provide, for the first time, borough-wide election opportunities for young people;
  • Create an opportunity for young people to actually see thier views being used through a postal election process;
  • Allow young people to be decision makers and shape services as they see fit;
  • Enable young people to share their views on their priorities for change.
Once elected the youth Mayor will be designated a fund of £25,000 to enable the youth Mayor and their advisors to allocate to and improve services aimed at young people.

Are you aged between 11-21? If so, why not have your say?

This is your chance to join in the "Your Vote, Your Say" campaign.

Youth Vote- Youth Mayor?

Would a Youth Mayor, who is the voice for young people, be good for Lambeth? Well for starters you'd get to choose who it would be. Once elected, the Youth Mayor would be in charge of a £25k fund to develop projects which put young people's ideas into action!
But first we need your views and votes, so complete our Online survey.
Alternatively,  print off our postcard, complete and return to the Youth Council.
