HERNE HILL FORUM: TUE 21st JUNE:
ANOTHER ATTENDANCE OVER ONE HUNDRED, LOADS OF ISSUES AND NEW OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE

A very good audience truned out for some fascinating debate and comment on a host of Lambeth and Southwark subjects. There was a very good presentation on policing on the Herne Hill side of Lambeth, with emphasis on Ruskin Park, items on Controlled Parking Zones, street vibrations, Herne Hill Junction, parking on Carlton Parade, lack of public toilets, Brockwell Park Lottery bid, and, most important, loads of people speaking from the floor. All the Councillors in Lambeth Herne Hill Ward, two from Southwark Village Ward, one from Thurlow Park Ward and the Deputy Leader of Lambeth were all present to listen, speak and contribute.
The next Herne Hill Forum will be in September, probably at the Baptist Church in Half Moon Lane. Don't miss it -- there'll be a leaflet through your door!

During the evening the Chair, David Cianfarani, stood down at the end of his very busy year, during which the Herne Hill Forum Public Meetings were attended by our Member of Parliament, GLA Assembly Member, the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for the 3 main parties, Green Party representatives, the Leader of Dulwich Community Council and 17 Councillors from Lambeth and Southwark. Giles Gibson is the new Chair and, on taking office, highlighted the huge amount of ongoing items and issues that had originated from the Herne Hill Forum, which of course means all of you. We thank you for bringing so many items to our Meetings. Hazel Watson remained as Vice-Chair and Jean Bergin became Treasurer. Yvonne Levy, Nicholas Abengowe, Alan Gaunt, Mary Hill and John Frankland were elected to the Committee, which also allows for up to 9 additional places for local Organisations such as Herne Hill Society, Friends of Brockwell Park and Carnegie Library, Springfield and Stradella and Hurst Street Residents, the Transport Umbrella Group and Herne Hill Traders.

Daphne Marchant, Lambeth's new Mayor escorted by Richard Marchant her consort and husband carried out the two hour marathon ceremony on a breezy afternoon.

The event organised by Robert Holden was attended by 110 people and the 50 that finished the course were rewarded with tea and Cake in Brockwell Hall where we were joined by Clr Clare Whelan, Executive member for Parks.

NEW CITY ACADEMIES. Private or State school.

Conditions of governance are substantially different. For £2million the sponsor geets to apoint the governors with only one parent governor allowed, has control of the curriculum, and selection and admission policy, the academy if exempt from the normal rules relating to exclusions. Is this really what we want. The goverment puts up £25 and pays the running costs- it seems the community is giving up a lot for just £2million.
