Late Night Economy
CENTRE OF HERNE HILL IMPACT OF LATE NIGHT ECONOMY AND LICENSING.
The Forum has taken the initiative in asking for a review of licensing by Southwark and Lambeth for the Centre of Herne Hill and its impact on people living close to the centre and the quality of life including public safety in the centre.
Present weakness on the Lambeth side are an apparent lack of joint action
Under the New Licensing Act 2003 which came into effect in November 2005.., enforcement can be a matter for Police, Licensing Officer, Planning Noise Team, Environmental Health. There isn't one point of call for a resident to report to.- notwithstanding that there are two Acts placing a duty on the local authority to take a lead role..
We are also seeking a joint approach by LAMSOUTH to planning and licensing. To achieve a Neighbourhood Centre with a good mix of provision needs a strategy policy.
An approach was made to the 9 councillors whose wards cover Herne Hill and our MP and GLA representative. We have had interest and support from all quarters a a meeting was held recently to address the issues attended by
good representation from both boroughs including Sharon Rowe the new Police Commander for Lambeth, Licensing chairs, officers. residents and business people and Councillors .
Tessa Jowell will issue a report on the meeting shortly
CLrs Sharon Malley, Becca Thackray , Clare Whelan and Dominic Thorncroft .
Thanks to those who couldn't attend but have been working diligently on this issue.
