New police community support officers take to the streets
The first five new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), funded by Lambeth Council, have started their beat in Brixton.
The five joined Councillor Mark Bennett, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, in central Brixton on their first day on the job on Wednesday (30 May 2007).
They are the first of the 22 extra PCSOs being funded by Lambeth Council to bolster the fight against crime across the borough.
The PCSOs replace the old warden scheme. The main differences between the two groups is that the PCSOs have greater powers and will report directly to Lambeth Police.
Councillor Bennett said: "I am delighted to meet five of the new PCSOs and see them deployed on the streets. We feel that putting them directly under the control of Lambeth Police will make them more effective in preventing crime and the fear of crime on the streets."
The council has made fighting crime its number one priority and the new PCSOs are part of that drive.
Recently released crime figures showed that overall crime is dropping in Lambeth with significant reductions in mugging and assault.
The PCSOs underwent an intensive training programme before joining the Brixton Police Team.
Brixton PCSO Terence Pring said: "We are looking forward to getting out into the community and being there to meet and help people on the streets. We are the first point of call for the community."
The Brixton PCSOs will work 10 hour shifts across seven days a week and be on duty from 7am to midnight.
New PCSOs will be joining Lambeth across the summer.
