LIDO OPENS

LIDO OPENS 2ND JULY 6.45AM

Against considerable odds the LIDO is to open according to schedule. Our SPy in the SKy Peter Bradley gives the following report.

Last Thursday and Friday, the pool was swept and scrubbed. Today, Tuesday June 12 in the afternoon, the water started filling the pool. As I write, after 8pm, it has gone past the mid point, heading for the shallow end, where the red boat is still beached.

Most of the builders' clutter has been removed from the poolside.

Outside, tarmac has been laid on the approach path from the car park to the new ceremonial entrance path with its cycle racks and three flagpoles. Turf is to be laid either side of the path next week.

The swimming season is due to start July 2 at 6.45am - be there or be square. Tuesday July 10 is the actual anniversary - 70 years to the day when it was opened in 1937. Swims on the birthday will cost... 70p!

There will be cake cutting at 9am and 2pm, though slices will be available throughout the day. The Lido Book will be available all day, at a special launch price of £5 (normally £6.99), with book signings by yours truly at 9am and 2pm.
