COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MAJOR CHANGES IN LAMBETH.
Following the introduction of the Community Engagement procedures. Both Norwood Area Committee and Streatham made a formal proposal to the Cabinet on 11th June to be allowed to continue in view of the current
" democratic deficits that have arisen ". Little was said as clearly some sort of
deals are being done. and Steve Reed agreed to meet the leaders of both main opposition parties..
COMMUNITY CALLS FOR ACTION
What is being presented as a new means of taking issues of major concern to the council is rather like scaling a fortified castle.
1. You must have a serious matter to be considered.
2. You must then get the signatures of at least 500 people, this higher number has been given as the Council feel they have been duped in earlier petitions with doubtful signatures. Well Reallly!!
3, You must then get the written support of 4 councillors
.4. The issue then may be considered by the relevant Scrutiny committee.
Once all other possible channels have been exhausted Officers/ Cabinet member/LSP
It must be of a social economic and environmental importance to the borough.
so for example the recent debacvle of the closure of the BRIXTON REC would not qualify.
Two recent examples of the workings and impartiality at recenbt meetings of
ENVIRONMENT SCRUTINY. members from one party left after and hour
leaving the meeting inquorate an unable to continue..
At last night's Cabinet, the chair of the Hosuing Scrutiny Clr Bowyer said that he had to leave the meeting early and that the resolution that was passed by the committee on the casting vote of the acting chair Clr Clyne could be disregarded.
