Clean Street

SORRY THIS HAS BEEN PRINTED IN VERY LARGE PRINT WE HAVE NOT ATTEMPTED TO DOWNGRADE THIS ACHIEVEMENT
LAMBETH ACHIEVES AWARD FOR 3RD. CLEANEST STREETS IN LONDON
commenting on this and the more recent award of a GREEN FLAG for Milkwood Community Park Cl Clare Whelan ,the former environment Executive Memeber comments
"Judging for the clean streets ranking actually took place in April but wasn?t announced until rather later on.
I am so pleased for all the people in the community who worked so hard on Milkwood Road. When I became Exec member for Environment there was one view ( not that of councillors) that Milkwood Road open space really had to be sold for housing. Seeing the Green Flag, and how well the space is used, absolutely justifies the decision not to do that. Great to see work about to start on the Lido too. "

Art Attack

ART ATTACK OR IS IT A CASE OF SERIOUS GRIME ??

Has anyone noticed the yucky green banners with splashes of purple on them appearing outside Brockwell and other Lambeth Parks. This appears to be part of campaign to promote Art in the Borough. Does anyone know which local
art group designed these banners.? I think we should be told.

HERNE HILL NEWS

HERNE HILL RESURFACING

Following the very well-supported petition organised by two residents on the street called Herne Hill, Lambeth Council agreed to resurface this busy road from Kestrel Avenue to the junction of Herne Hill Road / Red Post Hill in 2007. Further representations, and support from Councillors on both sides of the road, achieved the result of bringing the resurfacing forward a year: the great news is that work starts on Sep 4th (not Aug 23rd as shown on the yellow signs).

The Herne Hill street Audit, originally requested by the Chair of Herne Hill Forum, and carried out by Southwark, identified pavement deficiencies on the Southwark side. As a result, the stretch between Elfindale Road and Holmdene Avenue was relaid this week; next week its the turn of the section outside the Herne Hill (Carlton) Parade of shops, between Elfindale and Frankfurt Roads.

All the above works will greatly improve this area and we are grateful to both Lambeth and Southwark Councils for their efforts.

The next development will be the vehicle activated speed sign on Herne Hill close to Ruskin Walk: implementation has been delayed and we will advise as soon as we have a firm date.

MINES A DOUBLE

DULWICH RESIDENTS A CUT ABOVE THE REST NEW STREET DRINKING CURBS TO EXCLUDE DULWICH WARDS OR COULD BE OPEN ALL HOURS ?

Making Southwark a safer place tackling alcohol related disorder

FOLLOWING IS PRESS RELEASE FROM SOUTHWARK

The consultation process regarding the proposed introduction of a borough wide alcohol control area has now closed and a decision has been made.
More than 500 people provided feedback about the proposal and the council would like to thank everyone who took the opportunity to have their say about the issue.

New powers to confiscate alcohol

Southwark Council will introduce greater powers to penalise and confiscate alcohol from nuisance drinkers following a decision by council assembly to approve an alcohol control area. The decision will affect all areas of the borough with the exception of the three community council wards in Dulwich.
The new powers mean police will be able to confiscate alcohol from anyone causing a nuisance in public and if they refuse to stop drinking they can be arrested and prosecuted. The control area is expected to be introduced in November 2006.
To find out more, read the The following link opens in a new windowreport (96kb) that was presented to the council assembly.
You need Adobe Acrobat to view the document. The following link opens in a new windowDownload Acrobat Reader for free.

What is the issue?

A local authority, working with the Metropolitan Police, can impose an alcohol control area in any public space where public drinking causes a nuisance or disorderly behaviour.
A borough wide alcohol control area will tackle anti-social behaviour caused by alcohol misuse and is one way of reducing nuisance and disorder in your neighbourhood. This plan is aimed at enforcing these issues in specific areas with flexibility to prevent spreading the problem to other areas.

How will the alcohol control area be controlled?

The police and community wardens will have additional powers to deal more effectively with people drinking alcohol and causing a disturbance. They can ask people to stop drinking alcohol in the area and if they continue to do so the police and community wardens will have the powers to confiscate it.
The maximum penalty is £500 for people who refuse to stop drinking in a public space in the area.

Can I still have a drink in a public space?

Yes. The plan is not aimed at stopping local residents from enjoying a social drink in a park, celebrating at festivals and sporting events or drinking outside a pub in space set aside by pub landlords.

SOUTHWARK PARK GREEN FLAG

Southwark Park Receives Green Flag Award

Southwark Park has been awarded a Green Flag which means it has been officially recognised as one of England's best parks and green spaces.

About Green FlagSouthwark Park bandstand among the trees

Green Flag winners are judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained with the strong involvement of the local community.

The Green Flag Award Scheme is the only national benchmark for quality parks and green spaces.

Cllr Richard Thomas, Southwark Council's executive member for regeneration, said "This award is of enormous credit to the dedicated friends group and parks staff who work so hard to make Southwark Park such a great open space. It is also a reflection of the importance we place on continually improving and investing in our parks and open spaces."

MILKWOOD GREEN FLAG

Green Flag award makes Milkwood Community Park a high flier

Children in Milkwood Park
25 July 2006
Milkwood Community Park has won a prestigious Green Flag award - a nationally recognised standard for the quality management of parks and open spaces. The award demonstrates Lambeth Council's commitment to making all of its public green spaces clean, green, safe and welcoming for everybody.
For many years the small but popular green space, located between Brixton, Camberwell and Herne Hill, was unimaginative in design and layout, with few if any facilities for play, sport or relaxation.
Milkwood Community Park now provides locals and visitors alike with a delightful balance between the needs for a place to play and exercise, and space to relax and escape the demands of busy urban life.
It offers a wide range of facilities for all age groups and interests. As well as landscaped areas and new fencing, the park contains a new children?s playground, ball games court, seating, shelters and informal play areas.
The Park could not have been brought to its current splendour without the active support of local residents, represented by the Milkwood Tenants and Residents Association, as well as local housing providers such as London & Quadrant, and of course the many charities and organisations which funded its restoration and improvement for present and future generations.
Councillor Lib Peck, Cabinet member for Environment and Culture said: "This is Lambeth?s first Green Flag award, and we hope that this becomes the first of many awards for our treasured parks and green spaces. The community have worked tirelessly with us to upgrade their park, so the Green Flag recognition is well deserved."
Chair of the Milkwood Tenants and Residents Association, Maude Estwick said: "I am delighted that this community park is being honoured with the green flag. this shows that even a small and neglected open space can be transformed when the Council and the community work together.
For young people, particularly, the park is their "front room" in the summer but they have nowhere to go in the winter and our next task is to buy the church hall and create a community cafe, youth and other facilities."
Green Flag Award logoGreen Flags are only awarded to sites where there is a clear evidence of a commitment by and involvement of both the local authority and community to not only maintaining the tough standards set by Green Flag, but also sustaining them into the future.
The council continues to work with local people and park users to continue these improvements, including the development of a new community centre and further landscaping.

LAMBETH'S FIRST GREEN FLAG AWARD .

MILKWOOD COMMUNITY PARK.

Milkwood Residents Association were proud to receive Lambeth's first Green Flag award at a presentation in Birmingham. Maude Estwick along with Robert Overall Executive Director for Environment collected the flag on behalf of the borough.
Apparently Robert and Shaun Kiddell, Parks Manager had told Maud they would be collecting the flag. Maude made it quite clear it would be her and left the other two to fight it out who would accompany her.
Robert thought he recognized Maude as having thrown eggs at him over the dustcart issue.

This has come at an important time whilst Lambeth bids for significant funding to the Lottery Fund for major improvements to Brockwell and Myatts Parks, as one of the grant conditions is good standards of maintenance of parks.

WHAT'S HAPPENED AT YOUR STATION WHILST YOU WERE AWAY. ?

Well last Monday evening a hoax call about half past midnight brought
out the services include five ambulances and the previous Monday saw the weekend taking being snatch by a young man waiting at the bus stop- I have since heard that about 30% of the secure collections from stations are actually dummy runs- so not ,much to be gained there.

WHAT HAPPENED IN YOUR PARK LAST WEEKEND

It had been a bit wet wet and quiet. However on Monday morning Norwood Park found that its staff cabin had been burnt to the ground after someone had abandoned a stolen motor bike and set fire to it. Brockwell Park had reports of the police searching for a Latvian woman who had escaped from some form of enslavement and had sought refuge in the park. CLAPHAM had the most to report with 13 large four wheeled dustbins found in the Long Pond ( where you can run your model boat) and the woods sealed off by the police on reports of someone launching missiles at aircraft.
