VELODROME PUBLIC MEETING
Over 200 people turned out this evening for this meeting to discuss a way forward over the lockout at the Velodrome by the Dulwich Estates. Various speakers included Val Shawcross
who promised continued support from the Mayor Ken Livinsgtone, the London Development Agency promise of £1m if a scheme is approved.
The meeting was led by Philip Colivin whose efforts resulted in the reversal of a proposal to building avast cinema complex on the Crystal Palace site.
Sport England and the British Cycling Federation also pledged support and determination to see a continued regional facility for cycling at the Herne Hill Veldrome.
Southwark's former Mayor and international athlete in his own right also confirmed that Southwark would provide funding in the short term to ensure access to the site.
Dulwich Estates did not provide any representation.
They are presently trying to conclude a deal with a professional Leisure Management company to develop a business plan for the site.
Developers were seen earlier this week taking photographs in Village way- possibly looking for another main access to the site as one of th key objections to development is the increased traffic flow that would occur in Burbage Road.
The main outcome was that Philip was delegated to continue a dialogue with DE.
Val Shawcross indicated that the GLA and Southwark could adopt a robust approach
to ensure that a good g outcome for cycling was achieved.
Support was forthcoming from Tessa Jowell who has arranged a meeting with the represntatives of the campaign and Dick Caborn Minister for Sport.
