) On 22nd January at 4:45 pm a man was attacked and knocked unconscious in Norwood Road outside Bandido's Mexican Restaurant following an argument between two drivers. The argument followed a minor collision between their vehicles. Norwood Road was sealed off by police immediately afterwards. The victim has regained consciousness but has sustained serious injuries.

A suspect has been arrested and is currently on police bail pending further enquiries.

2) At lunchtime on 23rd January a security guard was rugby tackled as he delivered cash boxes to Sainsbury's on Herne Hill. The suspect stole a cash box - which was empty - and ran away down Carver Road.

Someone called this morning saying they had put a wrong postcode in an internet purchase and expected the package to arrive with us. Jane knew there was something fishy. When the package came later, it was addressed to her home address. The package was two mobile phones. The postman said there was a lot of this happening and he took them away to be sent back to the seller. Clearly the fraudster was going to get the phones and we were going to get the bills.

He has just come back and I pretended they had not been delivered. I asked him for an address and number where I could contact him to tell him when they arrived and he got three mobile phones from his pocket and gave me a number (I presume he is not getting the bill for that one either) and an address. Would the police be interested?

I do hope you will consider coming to the next meeting of the Dulwich Community Council which is on Tuesday 11 November at Herne Hill Baptist Church in Half Moon Lane . We start at 7pm and aim to finish soon after 9pm.

As you probably know the Dulwich Community Council covers East Dulwich , College, and Village wards (the three most southerly wards in Southwark). But this meeting is especially focussed on Village Ward.

Southwark Council is preparing a local area plan for each Community Council area.

This will not be a formal planning document in the sense of being used for deciding planning applications - its ambit is intended to be wider, and looser, than that. The idea of the local area plan is to try to identify and record our aspirations for improving (or preserving) our local area.

This meeting is an opportunity for you to influence what goes into our local area plan for Village ward.

So, for instance, should the Council's priorities in Village ward be focussed on public realm issues, like traffic or parking, and if so what are we trying to achieve overall; or should the focus be on the local primary schools; or on social services provision; or on "greening" Village ward. There are no easy answers, and no doubt all these things have a place – but where should the balance lie?

Thanks to Conservative Southwark Councillors who developed and supported a bid as a result of representation from Norwood Road Traders and the Forum for improvements to the area.

The last year has seen cosmetic and greening improvements along the Norwood Road as a result of efforts by some traders and grants for trees and hanging baskets.

At present indented parking bays are being provided close to the Croxted Road Junction to permit longer parking hours.

LAMBETH CHANGES PARKING CONTRACTOR

NCP Services has taken over as Lambeth Council's parking contractor in a new five year deal that the council regards as marking a further major step towards fairer parking in the borough.

Since 2006, the council has ripped up the unfair target-based contract and scrapped the use of clamping cars as a routine enforcement. However, residents still complained about the unfair attitude and behaviour of parking attendants and the new contract is set to address these issues.

NCP Services is the market leader in providing on-street parking management services to local authorities and specialises in customer focus training for Civil Enforcement Officers. The company's track record in training staff to ensure high levels of customer service and fairness was one of the key reasons the council chose NCP Services as its new contractor.

From Friday 1 August the civil enforcement officers, wearing smart new green uniforms, will be out and about helping to keep Lambeth's streets safe and free of congestion.

August will also see the introduction of new, state-of-the art handheld computers for all parking attendants, designed to maximize the accuracy and efficiency of the service.

install a crossing either outside Kindred's Bakers
or nearby. Neither proposal would pass mustard on
technical grounds. However the favoured option
would completely obliterate the short term bays outside 17-27 HML which local traders and residents fought hard to get. No reference has been made to local traders nor indeed the forum as this conflicts with the regeneration proposals for the area.

Re: Safer Lambeth Partnership and Community Engagement

You may be aware of the ongoing dialogue, over the past four years, regarding Community Engagement and the Safer Lambeth Partnership (the Partnership). Over that period, CPCG has reoriented itself, and constitutionally reformed, to provide a vehicle for that engagement.

This issue has again been visited by the Partnership and its Board, and on 29 April was presented by two papers addressing the issue.

One, from CPCG (see attached), reviewed the debate over recent years and again posited CPCG as the best placed vehicle for Partnership engagement, drawing on Home Office guidance (to use existing structures) and the Audit Commission's recent report, which specifically recommended that the Safer Lambeth Partnership engage with CPCG, the Safer Neighbourhood Panels and the putative Civic Assemblies.

A second paper, from Superintendent Paul Wilson of Lambeth MPS (see attached), recommended that the Partnership set up an Independent Advisory Group, which would be recruited under Nolan principles to reflect the borough's diversity and would meet with the Partnership quarterly. One of these meetings would be in public.

The Partnership Board meeting was unable to make a decision on these papers and has agreed a working group including CPCG Chair Anna Tapsell - to establish an agreed basis for moving forward.

At CPCG meeting on 6 May, CPCG Board promised to circulate the two papers to our members and hold a CPCG 'business meeting' to enable our membership to be fully appraised of the issues and to make a full contribution to the debate. This meeting will now take place at:

DRUGS AND TASER GUN SEIZED AT FLAT IN PARK VIEW HOUSE

On Friday 6th June the Herne Hill safer neighbourhood police team raided a flat in Park View House, Hurst Street SE24 using a drugs warrant. This followed complaints that drugs were being sold from the flat and offered openly to other innocent residents by the occupiers.

Drugs, an illegal Taser "stun gun", stolen property and over £1000 cash were seized. Two people inside were arrested for drugs, firearms and theft offences. Police will apply to a court to retain the cash until the occupier can prove that it was obtained lawfully.

OK, we get some aircraft noise, but now that Concorde is no longer flying the impact is relatively small.

So a new runway, north of the two existing runways at Heathrow, will presumably have little impact here.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

As you will see from the map attached showing the proposed flight paths for landings for that the third runway,

those brown arrows in the bottom right represent the short haul flights arriving from Europe that will be the primary user of this new runway..

They converge right over Herne Hill/Dulwich/Norwood.

So we can expect hundreds of flights per day directly overhead.

Herne Hill will become as heavily blighted as Richmond now is.

Midsummer Permaculture Introductory Weekend
Permaculture is the foundation of Transition thinking, working with Nature to supply our needs whilst enhancing the environment. It has been described as 'Revolution disguised as organic gardening.' It is much more than gardening, being a design philosophy applicable in all spheres of life that will help us meet the challenges of energy descent. It will be a revelation.
The course will be an introduction to the ethics, principles, observation, design techniques, and practical applications in the city. It will visit at least 2 permaculture sites in Brixton. The following two question's were put to the Mayor on Wednesday by CAROLINE

PIDGEON-Caroline has been newly elected under the list system as an Assembly Member.Answers will follow from the Mayor in a week or so in written format.

The bus priority scheme at Herne Hill Junction will not provide priority for 68 468 X68 and N68 bus routes and because it does not take suppressed demand into account,it is very likely that any initial bus priority provided by the slip road through Brockwell Park will be lost as the slip road fills with cars. Why is bus priority funding being considered for this scheme.

2 Bus Priority Modal Shift Factor 868/2008

Will you instruct TFL Network Assurance not to consider the bus priority scheme for Herne Hill junction unless an allowance for modal shift from car use to cycling has been included in the computer traffic model required for the scheme and to insist that the potential for modal shift is fully explored by Lambeth Council.

HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO BE IN ENGLAND, NOW THAT OUR BEAUTIFUL LIDO IS OPEN

As the proud owner of Adult Concession Season Ticket 2005910, I had the great good fortune to be in our beautiful Lido on the opening day of the new season. I had the pool to myself for most of the time, and the water temperature was just fine. As there are now three swimming lanes installed, one cannot do widths very easily, so I set out to do, and completed, 10 lengths. There were no Mallards to join me this time, but I was told that they do visit often, and chase off any other Mallards who dare to drop in.

I have to visit the Lido 30 times to get my money's worth, which I shall certainly endeavour to do, but as I said last time, today's swim alone was worth £105 of anybody's money. I look forward to meeting you in the Lido one day soon.

On Thursday 15th May at 4 pm police officers led by the Herne Hill safer neighbourhood team raided the "Next-to-Nothing" cafe at 107 Dulwich Road SE24 under a search warrant.

A dog trained to search for drugs was deployed and a substantial amount of herbal cannabis was found.

Two arrests were made for drugs supply offences.

Following on from previous blogs and soap-box items on this subject it is essential that everyone continues to watch for any sign of threats to the Post Offices in our area.
The Government has now announced a further 155 closures of London Post Offices, with a further 7 reprieved and 7 still being consulted on, which is very disturbing to so many communites. Dulwich and Herne Hill Offices are not mentioned and will remain open, although one in Acre Lane and one in Peckham Road sadly find themselves on the list.
We will certainly need to return to this subject at the HH Forum Public Meeting on 29 May, and continue to ensure that all our local Councillors are very much on their guard

Labour's Val Shawcross wins third term on London Assembly

Labour's Val Shawcross has won a third term as Lambeth and Southwark's representative on the London Assembly with a hugely increased majority over the Liberal Democrats.

Val Shawcross was first elected to the London Assembly in 2000. Although Caroline Pidgeon came a close second in 2004, the 2008 result will be a bitter disappointment to local Liberal Democrats who hoped to seize their first ever constituency seat on the London Assembly.

The blow will be softened by the news that Newington councillor Caroline Pidgeon has secured an Assembly seat via the London-wide list vote.

The totals for the three leading candidates are as follows:

Valerie Shawcross Labour 60,801 36% (2004: 36,280 29%)
Caroline Pidgeon Liberal Democrat 36,953 22% (2004: 30,805 25%)
Shirley Houghton Conservative 32,835 20% (2004: 17,379 14%)

Turnout in the two boroughs stood at 42 per cent up 8.7 per cent on 2004.

The results of the mayoral contest in the Lambeth & Southwark constituency also delivered a clear advantage to Labour's Ken Livingstone, although this was outweighed by the stronger support for Boris Johnson in outer London constituencies.

With the British National Party having won its first ever seat on the London Assembly, City Hall is likely to be the setting of some heated political exchanges over the next four years.

42 Bus saga -- the latest news

TfL have now advised that the interim short extension to North Dulwich station, proposed by some Committee members of the Herne Hill Forum, will not come to pass as "it would require an extra bus and passenger revenue would not justify it".
This despite it adding just two stops to its current terminus in Sunray Avenue, creating extra links at North Dulwich Station, providing a fast City link to many people living around Dulwich Village, and no doubt improving the toilet situation for drivers.
However, our efforts have brought back into focus the longer extension proposed via the new Dulwich Hospital to Sainsbury's, where a bus-stand now exists.
Lobbying for this will now continue on a wider scale

There were at least two outbreaks of violent behaviour emanating from

the CLIP ART barbers shop on Friday evening.

The shop was packed with about 50/60 young people.

at about 9pm a fight started sprawled onto the street with large crowded gathering around. The Police were called but had difficulty because of the gridlock traffic on Norwood Road caused by road works.

The situation was soon under control. Many of the customers were young mothers with very young children in buggies.

This idea is in the earliest stages but we are working with Whippersnappers who work at Brockwell Lido with young people of all ages and backgrounds. The whole idea is to engage young people and they would be creating the mural with guidance from experienced arts educators. The whole project has to be long term and sustainable and I agree that we have to involve young people in such a way that they take ownership of the project and take pride in their work.

I will try to keep you posted on future developments. The first step is to persuade Network Rail that this is a good idea!

Herne Hill Junction improvement scheme a step closer

A major scheme that will improve traffic flow and the safety of cyclists and pedestrians at one of South London's busiest and most congested junctions is a step closer after receiving conditional planning approval.

Lambeth Council's planning committee last night gave the go-ahead for package of improvements around Herne Hill Junction and the entrance to Brockwell Park (March 19).

The scheme will improve traffic flow at the notorious bottleneck junction, while at the same time improve safety and the quality of the streetscape. With the planning application approved, the council will now seek to finalise funding arrangements for the scheme and seek other technical approvals.

John Brunton, Vice Chair of the Herne Hill Society, said: "We're delighted that this scheme has taken this important step forward. These improvements are long overdue. The scheme will help transform Herne Hill while also improving the currently unattractive entrance to Brockwell Park."

There has been a desperate need for a number of years to solve the problem of serious traffic congestion around the extremely busy Herne Hill junction, which causes long delays for commuters and which has a serious impact on local businesses and residents.

At present the junction is dominated by a constant flow of traffic making the area intimidating and dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists, and damaging local businesses. The junction is prone to congestion which creates lengthy delays not only for private vehicles but also for commuters using the seven bus routes the junction serves.

An essential feature is a new slip road between Norwood Road and Dulwich Road. Part of this solution involves moving the Brockwell Park boundary a short distance back from its current position. However, only around 0.2% of the total area of the park will be affected and most of that will go to create an attractively landscaped island in the centre of the junction.

The new scheme will combine significant improvements to the appearance of the park entrance with upgraded and safer pedestrian access to the park. The project aims to enhance the broad experience of all those using the area, including residents, visitors, traders, shoppers and public transport users.

The council places the highest value on parks and green spaces. That is why it has worked hard on a solution that brings desperately overdue traffic improvements, but at the same time strives to minimise the impact on the park.

The plans have been developed with the input of representatives of the community. 79 per cent of local residents, businesses and bus users who responded to a consultation exercise in 2004 were in favour of the scheme.

MAYORAL VOTE LAMBETH

Register now to vote in May

Thousands of Lambeth residents could lose their chance to have a say in London's future in May because they are not on the electoral register, unless they act before April 16.

In Lambeth it is possible that as many as 10,000 residents will not be able to vote because their names are not on the current register of electors. London has the worst rate for voter registration in the country with almost one in five residents missing from the register in some parts of the capital.

The council says that many Londoners may just be unaware that they must be on the register to vote, and do not realise how easy it is to do this. However, to vote you need to live in London, be at least 18 years old on 1 May, be a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen and be on the electoral register.

To combat this, the council delivered registration forms with the last Lambeth life, to encourage people to get on the electoral roll in time for the Mayor of London and the London Assembly elections on May 1.

Residents who want to check if they are on the electoral register can call 020 7926 2685 or can download a registration form.

The deadline for registering to vote is 16 April.

BUS 201........ A LAMENT TO TfL

For the past three years we have been putting forward a very serious case for a short extension to bus route 201, which would mean that it would still serve Herne Hill, but also create some new transport links and remove it from small side-streets such as Hurst and Rymer streets.

The following summarises the proposal in a more lighthearted way --

Roll up and get some money

The cleaner greener safer (CGS) programme has a successful track record of delivering projects in Southwark. With over £3.25 million this year, the programme is open for applications now, but closes on March 31.

Each community council will vote on worthy projects and hand out around £400,000 in each area. As the name suggests, the programme funds are available to projects that aim to make the area cleaner, greener, or safer.

In recent years, successful and popular CGS projects include a bike track in Burgess Park, Brandon estate picnic benches and a Camera Obscura at Michael Faraday Primary School.

HERNE HILL PARADE -- TRANSFORMED!

The Herne Hill (aka Carlton) Parade of shops has been completely transformed, the final piece of the jig-saw being added with the tarmac-ing of the area in front of the shops.
There are now short-term parking, bicycle stands, really attractive heritage-style streetlamps and hanging baskets, as well as smooth pavements.
All shops are currently occupied: estate agent, dry cleaner, fish and chip, newsagent, chemist, grocer and coffee shop/restaurant.
Thanks are due to Southwark Council, local Councillor Robin Crookshank-Hilton and the shopkeepers themselves, who all contributed to the scheme in different ways to create the final result.
The lack of short-term parking was originally flagged up at a Herne Hill Forum Public Meeting three years ago.

POST OFFICE CLOSURES -- BE VIGILANT

At a recent Herne Hill Forum Public Meeting I soap-boxed the issue of the threat of Post Office closures, and the need to be very vigilant.
The Herne Hill Office, which is to all effects and purposes in an implant situation, is a vital facility for so many of us, and has very helpful staff. The small Office in Dulwich Village is in an area poorly served by public transport and also a vital location.
Reading that announcements about / implementaion of closures are to be halted during the period running up to local (not London), GLA and Mayoral elections means that we should all scan the papers thoroughly in May in case we are threatened in the future.
It is worrying that the Post Office Card Account, a new card system that replaced the benefits book in 2003, will have to be put out to competitive tender because of EU Competition laws. On the other hand many Post Offices now stock Euros at reasonable rates and, although they no longer seem to issue passports, for a small fee the Herne Hill Office will currently check the very complicated passport renewal form (and whether in your photo you are smiling too much or too little!) and send it off for you .
So let's use it -- that way we won't lose it!

Kirsty McHugh is deputy Executive member for Housing.

This report was given at our recent meeting.

It is an immense privilege to represent Herne Hill on Lambeth Council because of the energy of the community, the diversity of residents and businesses and the attractiveness and potential of our area. But Herne Hill requires public investment, co-operation between agencies and support for local people's efforts to regenerate their area. It is our mission to help provide these. Here are some of our campaigns and activities over the past two years.

MILKWOOD ROAD- we stopped the dustcarts.

We worked with residents to force the council to change plans to re-site its dustcarts and cleaning fleet onto the Mahatma Gandhi Estate.This would have blighted this area of Herne Hill,including Milkwood Community Park and put the health of children at local schools and the nursery at risk. Instead the educational bus fleet and street cleansing vehicles will be based on the site for a temporary period, while the council purchases a permanent site for its entire fleet away from residential areas.

New Schools for Herne Hill

With our support, the council, working with government. has embarked on the ambitious programme to provide two new secondary schools to serve the Herne Hill area( at Shakespeare Road and Elm Green) plus the new Michael Tippet special school.We continue to press for new primary provision, but applaud the work of St Jude's and St Saviours and the efforts of Jessop to improve.

Major Investment in Brockwell Park

We were delighted to see he Lido revitalised are in full support of the Heritage Lottery Fund/Council programme of regeneration for Brockwell Park it is the jewel in Herne Hill's crown.

Herne Hill Junction Regeneration plan

We've helped the Forum take forward its ambitious and vital plans to remodel Herne Hill Junction and to regenerate the neighbourhood centre making it safer, greener and betters for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users. We ensured the council provided resources and corporate commitment to take this complex project forward and worked hard to secure the support of transport for London. We look forward to the works starting this year, after it has been through the planning committee.

The Harris Federation propose to launch a new Boys' Academy in East Dulwich, linked to the Harris Girls' Academy on the other side of Peckham Rye Park. For many years, families in the area have suffered from a lack of good secondary schools in Southwark, especially for boys, and many of our children have had to travel miles out of Southwark to get an education.

EDGE (East Dulwich for a Good Education) was formed by members of the local community shortly after Harris' announcement. Many of us have young sons, and we wholeheartedly welcome the Government's intent to invest money in a new local secondary school in the area. However, since the original 600, and then 750 pupils, the number has gone up to 950 boys, and Southwark and Harris have so far failed to address our concerns about the resulting tinderbox conditions and lack of outdoor space.

"Crime magnet" phone boxes finally removed from Brixton after council campaign

Phone boxes in Brixton that were being used by drug dealers as cover from CCTV have finally been removed after a long campaign by Lambeth Council.

Six phones boxes were removed from Brixton High Street last week after the council, police and other partners in the Safer Lambeth Partnership persuaded BT that they were helping dealers peddle drugs without fear of being caught on camera.

An important Supplementary Planning Document because it sets the standards of space and quality for new and converted housing. However this was withdrawn at the last minute from the January Cabinet agenda for a re-write, so for the time being it's rather vague about what developers should provide.

FUTURE BRIXTON
The Regeneration team aim to write up their report from the current consultation events during MARCH in order to present it to the Council's Cabinet for approval on 28 APRIL.
We were due to have a presentation on 14 February, but the Council speaker got the time wrong. I am still trying (as the meeting requested) to re-arrange for our next committee date on Thursday 13 March. Given that this is a late date in the process, it might be best to focus on one or two specific areas OR issues that have arisen from workshops/ roadshows/ conversations in the pub etc. so far - but tell me soon!

I will try to circulate more material soon, but subject to currently working 6 days a week on the day job. Thanks for recent feedback - it is valued, even if I cannot always respond directly.

Planning survey results
Thank you so much to the 255 people who completed my "Protecting London's Streets and Gardens" survey. The results of the survey are now available on my website http://www.valshawcross.com/index.php?id=352.

The vast majority of you agreed with me that councils need more planning powers to protect the character of our area. I am using the results of the survey to keep up the pressure on Ken Livingstone to bring these proposals forward as soon as possible. Post Offices Survey
As many of you will have heard, on Tuesday Post Office Ltd announced that they wish to close 171 post office branches in London - 14 of which are in Lambeth & Southwark.

I am extremely angry at the proposals. Post Offices play a vital link in the social and economic life of local communities. I am very worried that at a time when we are seeking to regenerate poorer areas of London that local shopping parades will be hit by the loss of an important local service which attracts shoppers to use their local shops and facilities. I am particularly concerned that the criteria for access to Post Offices has been downgraded in London - previously deprived communities in London had to be within a half mile of a post office. Now this has been reduced to 1 mile. I will be making strong representations to Post Office Ltd and I would encourage any one worried about the impact of losing these post offices to do the same.

BRIXTON BRIEFING ON TFL PROJECTS

BRIEFING BY TRANSPORT FOR LONDON ON CENTRAL BRIXTON TRANSPORT

PROJECTS 28TH FEBRUARY 08

As you may be aware Transport for London (TfL) and Lambeth are taking forward a number of schemes to improve Brixton Town Centre, including Brixton Central Squares, Brixton High Road refurbishment and various other highway and railway viaduct refurbishment works in and around the market.

We have been able to secure, at relatively short notice unfortunately, the attendance of Principal Engineer for Road Network Development at TfL, Andrej Znak, who will give us an update on the TfL-led activities in Brixton.

We will also be able to give an update on Lambeth-led street and railway improvement works.

This meeting will be in Room 8 of the Town Hall, next Thursday the 28^th February.

While this is principally a briefing for ward members in all 4 relevant wards AND for Transport Forum members, the invitation has also been extended to transport forum attendees and other interested parties that we are aware of. If you would like to forward this invitation on to any other representatives of interested groups/ organisations please feel free to do so.

Please note that this is part of an ongoing engagement and communications process for the various works in Brixton and there will be further opportunities for meetings and other briefings on more specific detailed issues as and when required.

PARK ASSAULTS

LOCAL GANG DISRUPT COMMUNITY.

A gang of four young men have been touring Brockwell Park on bikes and causing distress to local people.

Two regular users were mugged in the "Green Shelter".

Last Friday- they cycled within the park after closing time dismounted at the Herne Hill Gate jumped over and carried out a mugging on a passer by.

Hi everyone

You may recall that on the original plan both North Dulwich station and the adjacent road bridge were to be well and truly closed (no trains, no crossing of the bridge, not even pedestrians) on 3 weekends: 13-14jan08, 23-24 feb08, 13-14apr08.

As you know, they missed the first weekend completely since they had neglected to get planning permission in time, and now that work on the bridge has started I keep looking by from time to time to see how they are doing, and wondering whether it looked like they were going to meet this all important second closure weekend.

Frankly, for the last few weeks activity on the Red Post Hill bridge site has been pretty minimal. The number of major items of plant well outnumbered the number of staff, and in true British workman style if you were lucky enough to find one actually working then there were another three advising or simply watching. When I queried the guys on site about the lack of action it was attributed to the managers of the various utilities (MOVU), whose services run over the bridge, who seemingly could not make up their mind about the essential rerouting of the services involved. Naively I imagined that because of the expense involved, that you did not move heavy plant in until you knew what you were going to do, and how you are going to do it. Clearly that is considered to be an old fashioned idea by modern "managers" J.

Earlier this week it became evident that effort was being cranked up: more equipment had appeared along with generators, site offices and latrine blocks on the banks of the railway cutting alongside Half Moon Lane. A substantial mini bridge had been built out of scaffolding on the Half Moon Lane side of the road bridge to take the diverted services in chunky, flexible ducting which was then being put in place. Even so it looked like a lot of work still needed to be done and I queried whether enough would be done in time for the closure to go ahead this weekend as planned.

Now I don't really believe that it was my innocent enquiry that has caused activity to more than double in the last two days, but more than double it has. It was positively swarming with orange coated ants in white hard hats this morning, and quite a few of them (maybe even as many as half of them) were actually doing something. OK, taping screening to the railings to spare us the embarrassment of seeing "hairy bummed workers" (his words) using the latrines may not seem like a major contribution to the all important task of replacing the existing bridge structure, but apparently it is all necessary preparatory work J. So is diverting the services, but progress on that so far is pretty minimal. Lots of old ducting pipes have been exposed but not a single one has yet been diverted.

Sadly the flexible ducting put in place on Monday has now been removed, apparently to be replaced by something more substantial at the request of MOVU, and so the orange ants are now busily building an even more substantial gantry on the station side of the bridge. Whilst I believe that they probably now have enough staff on site to get that done in time, there seems to me to be a high risk that MOVU may well strike again J . Frankly, it is all far too last minute for me to feel anything other than whoever is running this project, is flying it by the seat of his pants.

Anyway the guys on site seem convinced that the close down will indeed take place this weekend and the major works (removing the bridge structure) will take place. Heavy cranes are due to move in on Friday evening and my guess is that from then on it will be continuous 24 hour working. They seem to think it will attract a lot of spectators, and if they have a crane on the Half Moon Lane side of the bridge, then that whole junction is going to be pretty congested, which may possibly impact on the P4 bus service.

HERNE HILL- SAFE?

IS HERNE HILL STATION. SAFE ?

Herne Hill station is not a nice place to be after 7 in the evening. The area once you come off the platforms to the front entrance around the corner to the alley way to Milkwood Road is quite spooky and the fact that it is not manned after approx. 7pm is disgracefully.

My girlfriend was mugged in this precise area a couple of years ago by the ticket machine. It's such an easy place to be mugged as it is very enclosed and not in view of the main front area. Which is closed in the evenings!!

As my girlfriend was going out for the evening, on a Friday night, at 7.30 you would imagine that she would feel safe going to her local station to get her ticket and then catch a train. This is a disgrace especially as fares continue to rise every year. The front area of Herne Hill station should be open until at least 11pm with staff attending platforms on a regular basis. And finally, the spooky area should be opened out so it's not a nice little target area for the vermin that target vulnerable people who have to use the station in the evening.

GREEN CHAIN

Dear Councillor Eckersley,

I am writing to you to provide an update on Southwark's bid to become a part of the South East London Green Chain.

It's been a long process but finally Southwark's proposal to extend the South East London Green Chain has now been formally accepted!

A formal invitation to Cllr Rajan will be extended in the coming weeks with a view to Southwark becoming a member borough from the 1st April 2008. The first stages will be to undertake a review of the feasibility study and establish where infrastructure is required in order to get the route functional. Following initial discussions with the Green Chain Project Officer it is hoped that the signage will be in place this summer. Amendments to the Green Chain marketing would then follow to incorporate the Southwark extension.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the last 4 years including the approval of the original CGS applications back in 2004 and the capital bid during 2007. By becoming a part of the Green Chain, many of Southwark's core objectives will be met while taking advantage of the cultural, educational, recreational and ecological benefits that the Green Chain has to offer.

However:

first time entrants into the criminal justice system are increasing and black and minority ethnic young men are disproportionately affected;
levels of violent crime remain high; and
the Drugs market in Brixton is still in place despite partnership efforts.
